These are the adventures of the U.S.S. Orchid, their ongoing mission: to not fuck up space too bad wherever they go.

Mr. Barnes to Engineering
Bucky would be making his rounds, doing his job as Chief of Security, when there would come a call from engineering. Initially, he believed that the chief engineer needed his attention; the first three or so times, he'd gone down there expecting to need to break up some fight between a group of ensigns or need to check the safety of one thing or another. Instead, he'd found himself face-to-face with the disarmingly charming grin of Chief Jack Harkness: the menace of the universe.
This morning was no different. He stepped into engineering and stood on the short metal balcony that afforded him a full view of the area. There, standing at one of the consoles was the tall brunette in question. "Alright, Harkness, what is it? You wouldn't tell me over the comm, so either it's a serious security breach or you're wasting my time."

It had been three years since he stepped down from being a captain and decided on being an engineer instead and he'd been content to float along unattached for rest of the foreseeable future. He was done with the commitment thing for a while.
Then, six months ago, he'd accepted his current position aboard The Orchid and he'd met her Chief of Security. Of course, James Barnes' attractiveness was obvious and that was the cause of his initial glance, it had been his personality that had kept Jack's gaze. It didn't help that this man knew how to play a mean game of hard-to-get, Jack flirted and advanced and he got the brush off over and over, but he didn't stop trying, not as long as he wasn't making Bucky uncomfortable.
So he tried again, calling the younger man down with no real answer as to why and checked on the ship's systems as he waited. It seemed a hundred years before that deep and rich voice rang out above him, causing a smile to come to his face, although he didn't look away immediately; he was still on the clock, after all.
"I hardly consider it a waste of time."

Bucky very nearly turned around and left without anymore ceremony, but he sighed instead and leaned on his arms against the railing. "I'm a busy man, Harkness, you're lucky I don't say something to the Captain about how you like to take advantage of my attention." He probably could have worded that better.

"Besides, Mr. Barnes, I know you're not actually busy, because you're off duty as of..." He glanced at the old-fasioned wrist watch he liked so much. "--now."

And damn him for being right about the time, too, Bucky hadn't even noticed. He shook his head in exasperation, though a small smile snuck it's way to his face.
"That doesn't mean I'm not busy, Jack. In fact, I've got somewhere to be in twenty minutes and I have to submit my report, so you've got five."

It was a date proposition: plain and simple and while it could be seen as a simple outing between friends--Black's oddly-named little place was very popular on the ship--that wasn't Jack's intention and he would bet Bucky knew it.

It was something else, that was for sure and it was very likely Jack could sweep him off his feet if he let him, but Bucky had already given his heart to someone else; it was difficult to hand over something you didn't have anymore.
His tone turned joking, but there was a hint of sincere apology mixed into it. "I'm sorry to have to break your heart like this, but I'm a taken man, Jack."
no subject
"Really now? Well, you should know: I'm open to sharing."
no subject
"I can't really speak for him, but unfortunately, I'm not really the sharing type. Besides, your five minutes are up."
He started backing up towards the door.

But there was one thing that now had him burning with curiosity.
"Wait, won't you tell me who the lucky fellow is? I gotta know."
no subject
"Sorry, Harkness, that is classified information. See you."
Bucky gave a small salute and turned, the doors sliding shut with a light mechanical sound behind him. Jack would just have to deal with not knowing, for now, he needed to head back to his quarters if he wanted to be ready for his 'date.'
A couple of losers on the bridge
For now, Locke was content to kick back in his chair and rest his crossed feet on the edge of his station. It wasn't like there were any controls on that particular part of the thing.
Five minutes later, the door to the elevator whirred and the sound of long strides across the bridge was quickly followed by the appearance of the tall blond who relieved a somewhat irritated crewmember who had been manning the console.
"You're late."

Jet sat at his station and made quick work of making sure everything was running smoothly before addressing the other man any further.
"I overslept; didn't get as much sleep as I should have." But oh well, he was here now, besides, what he'd been working on was a hundred percent worth it. A certain anniversary was coming up and while it was upsetting to know he'd be innumerable miles away from his partner on the actual date, that didn't mean he couldn't do something special for it anyway.
He ran a hand through slicked back hair and sighed, the adrenaline from realizing he'd overslept finally slipping away. He glanced over at Locke and shook his head with a small scoff.
"The captain's not likely to be too happy about your boots on his ship."
